Abby Wambach honored at ESPYs with Icon Award
Pittsford native and former United States soccer player Abby Wambach was honored at Wednesday night’s ESPY Awards in Los Angeles. The 36-year-old, who retired last December, shared the Icon Award with two other recently retired superstar athletes, Kobe Bryant of the Lakers and Peyton Manning of the Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos.
“It was never about trying to be the best player in the world or scoring more goals than anyone else,” said Wambach, who retired as the all-time leading scorer among men and women in international soccer history. “What it was about was just working as hard as I could and being as committed as I could and embracing every challenge.”
